A new 48-hour ferry strike has been announced by the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’ s Federation (PNO) for May 16 and 17. The strike is expected to affect all ferries and ship categories and will start at 00:01 on Tuesday, May 16th and end at 24:00 on Wednesday May 17th.
Greek seamen are ones again protesting against the absence of collective labor agreements and increased unemployment in their sector.
The federation has warned, in a statement, that the two-day strike may be the beginning of a rolling program of strikes.
The danae.travel team will warn all travelers who have used our platform to book their ferry crossings and provide alternatives. Other Travelers are advised to check with their travel agents or contact local port authorities for further information. Passengers whose trip is cancelled due to the strike are entitled to a full refund of their ticket.
It looks like this has been known for sometime as you have dated this May 5th is that correct? If so the travel company that we booked with should have known about this, correct? My son is now stuck on Santorini and has paid in full for his accommodation and fast ferry to Mykonos on May 16th. He is travelling alone is there any way to get him to Mykonos by a private company? Thanks for any help that you may have.
Bev
Dear Beverly, I am sorry that your son is stuck in Santorini. Danae Travel informed all it’s clients and offered alternatives within the previous week. Today there is a ferry that will most probably depart from Santorini to Mykonos at 12:15. The ferry seems fully booked in the system but i would suggest that your son goes to the port or the shipping company’s port agent – Nomikos Travel in Fira – and checks for a seat via last minute cancellations. I am not aware of private boats but he can ask at his hotel as this is something that would be organized locally.
Do you know of any means to get to Crete aside from flying at obscene prices? Seems the strike has been extended until the 19th.
Dear Paul, unfortunately the strike has been extened until the 19th. I do not know from where you want to get to Crete but from Piraeus (Athens)ferries will depart on 19/05 at 23:59. also the ferries departing from Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Ios and Santorini are travelling today – 17/05 and tomorrow to Heraklio in Crete. Concerning flights there is also SkyExpress, which is a low cost airline and goes to Crete.
I hope that the above information will help you.
Hi!!! I’m also in the same boat, I’m suppose to go to Mykonos tomorrow! So you know if the ferries will be back on? Or where I can get these last minute cancellation seats? It’s been stressful 🙁
Dear Lisa, You are supposed to go to Mykonos tomorrow from where? If you are leaving from Athens then the next available ferry will be on May 20th which is when the stike will end. If you are in Santorini then you must go to the port agents in Fira and they will help you out if there are any last minute seats.
Sorry I forgot to mention, from santorini! Thank I will find out.
Hello do you know there is a ferry from athens to mtkonos today afternoon 19/05? I read the strike has been extended.
Carolina based to the latest information the strike will end today May 19th at midnight. The boat that most probably sail to Mykonos today will be Nissos Mykonos.
